Design Wall Monday and Weekly Goals

The Garden Gate Plaids top is a flimsy.  I used whatever homespuns were in the box paired with assorted COC, WOC, and tans backgrounds.

This went together quickly and I really like it.   I'm so glad Pam suggested a quilt-a-long!!  Please check everyone's design walls at Patchwork Times.

Weekly Goals--
  1. one yoyo block
  2. finish applique block
  3. quilt last 3 borders on the pink horror
  4. sew on one binding
  5. move one UFO one more step

The cold weather makes it easy to stay inside and sew.  I haven't caught a cold this season--I credit it to drinking a small glass of orange juice each day.  I do add a bit of peach schnapps to the orange juice to make it taste even better.   And a cherry to make it pretty!

Have you any hints to avoid colds and flu?  Home remedies?  How about strange myth, legend, or folklore in your family??

I have a home remedy--my grandmother always gave me hot sweet lemonade to drink when I was ill, especially for an upset stomach.

I remember how much as kids we didn't like getting nose drops when we got stuffy... now I use a saline nasal spray at least twice a day (when I get up and before bed) and more often if I do get stuffy. I almost never get sick and if I do - it lessens the severity of it. Can't convince my husband to try the spray - he's afraid he'll drown... LOL

Lori, it's good to see your quilt in one piece. I'm not nearly as far along on mine (still making the 9 patches)but i'm getting there and hope to do lots of work on mine this week.

My husband and I had a good laugh this morning about your OJ. I like the way you think. My hint is to just stay in as much as possible. I literally rush into stores and back out. And use hand sanitizer. And worry. I'm sure the worrying helps.

Your quilt looks great, reminds me of a quilt my aunt made. As for fighting the cold germ war... I wash my hands so much they literally scream at me when I get near soap and water but it works!!

I love how such a simple block as a 9 patch can look so nice once in a quilt! Nice choice of colors. We always dress for the weather, including scarfs. Almost all the school kids over here (Austria) wear hats and scarfs and dress for the weather. I am always shocked when I am in Canada and see the kids waiting for the school bus wearing t-shirts... in the snow! Also, the kids over here have more vacations - 2 weeks at Christmas, 1 week in Feb. for energy conservation, 2 weeks Easter and 1 week in May. The kids need a break so they don't get sick. More times than not, I think sweeping sicknesses start in the school aged kids and spread around. I can tell you - the kids in my sons class are hardly ever sick. Also - the window is always open part of the day, no matter how cold it is - the kids put their sweatshirts on if they are cold! Cheers! Evelyn

I love this quilt. I think that there isn't much to do to prevent a cold except stay out of harms way -a direct sneeze or cough, yea right. But I think saline nasal sprays helps when you have the cold and exercising regularly helps keep immune strong before getting it. Otherwise, I am not sure there is much anyone can do but ride it out.

Love the way this top is looking. I've been building a bit of stash in reproduction/civil war fabrics, including neutrals and shirtings... Your quilt design would be great with them.
As to colds, i always use my own pen when writing checks or signing receipts, eat one or two tangerines or clementines each day (i understand vitamin c dissipates quickly when exposed to air) and wash my hands frequently & extend the duration of each hand-washing a bit.
Thanks for linking up with Judy! Good luck this next week... You have ambitious goals!

I like this quilt, too, especially the bursts of pink and how it moves from block to block. Nice job!

I've avoided the flu, but still struggle with allergies.

Yay!!!!!!!Clap,clap,clap....that's me applauding you getting that top together.

I find that as long as I take my vitamins & supplements, especially garlic & vitamin D, I don't catch too much. Not even a cold yet this year....and I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Sun's shining, looks warm, 13 degrees. I'm at work even though SOME people around here get MLK Day off, like the other city employees, bank, post office.

I love plaids and I love 9-patches! My project of the week is also a plaid 9-patch.

My mom was a big believer in drinking tea with honey for a sore throat and plain tea for an upset stomach. But I was also forced to drink castor oil occasionally too. Can't say how much I hated it.

I don't get as many colds and flu as I did when I was teaching. I'm still in schools most days but not touching kids or handling their papers, etc so I probably avoid many of the germs.

I love this quilt. Saved the pattern to print out and start pulling fabric.

Love your plaids and I think your boats from Sunday look great, too.
I take vitamins every day, wash my hands often, try to avoid other sick people and, at the first sign of a scratchy throat, start sipping peach schnapps! Since we use alcohol to kill germs on the outside of our bodies, I'm sure it works the same way on the inside!!!
