Design Wall Monday and Weekly Goals

Monday, September 9, 2013
A new project has been started this week--the Basic Blocks Sampler.  The first block is a favorite--Jacob's Ladder.

Yes--its the design wall picnic table!  (patriotic vinyl table cloth--I love those stars)   A teal blue and a rust paired with the light apricot background.  Please see everyone's design walls at Patchwork Times.

Weekly Goals--
  1. finish one more YoYo block
  2. lay out a set of blocks to sew together
  3. work on doll quilt
That's about all I have at the camper with me.  The days are getting shorter but so far not cooler.  Have you started any new projects?  Finished an old one?

First I promised you a picture of my purchases(Design Picnic Table)---

The oriental print at the bottom is my focus and backing fabric.  The creamy yellow is the background.  The other fabrics coordinate (more or less).  These are for a sampler quilt (or two?) I'm participating in on-line.  I like samplers, love the variety of blocks and fabrics you can use.  The teal and periwinkle blue, the rusts/oranges and golds/yellows are all favorite colors.  Some blacks and browns will go into it as well.  See what everyone is working on at Patchwork Times blog.

Weekly Goals--
  1. Make sampler blocks (Jacob's Ladder)
  2. Finish a yoyo (almost done)
  3. bind orange/teal baby quilt
That's enough for this week.  Beautiful weather today, sitting around doing nothing is easy to do!

The year is 3/4 over, so far I'm happy with what I've gotten done.  I thought I would be further on my yoyos but that's okay.  I've been wasting time working on relearning an old hobby--crochet.  I think a dishcloth is what I'll work on.

Have you tried an old hobby this summer?  Thought about your goals?

Sunday Stash Report

First--I have a finish.  Dee's Stars---

Jackie--you should recognize some of the fabrics--I know most the white is from your box, and there are other prints from it.  Mary Kay--there are fish and balloons and roses from your box.  This quilt was made using 5" charms I had cut from scraps---all KINDS of scraps.  It finished about 75x88"--a nice sized QOV.  It took a long time to finish the binding--it has a black border AND binding--and I could only work on it when the light was good.  The picture is somewhat washed out- bright early morning sunshine but the wind wasn't blowing!   11 yards used in this quilt.

Friday Pat and I went shopping--armed with coupons.  I can't find my receipt--but since I know how much I spent--I bought 40 yards.  And I bought 2.75 yds the week before.  Ouch!!

My numbers for 2013 are now--

Stash out this week--11 yards
Stash in this week--42.75 yards
Stash in YTD--114.75 yards
Stash out YTD--100.5

Stash is ahead--14.25 yards

How do I feel about my numbers?  Good!  The fabric I bought included focus fabric, background, backing and fabrics that would coordinate.  I bought fabric for a new project--a sampler quilt I'm doing with an on-line group.  Only one piece that was a "just because I like it" purchase, a teal 30's--remember in July I didn't have any teal 30's for my Rainbow Scrappy Challenge?  Well--I decided I REALLY NEEDED a teal in that quilt!  Later this week I'll try to take picturesSee everyone's stash reports at Patchwork Times blog.

A short whine about new technology.  About 6 weeks ago I bought a Nexus 7 tablet.  Not so much to replace my laptop--but I had worn out my kindle.  Android technology--I'm slowing learning the ropes.  But now Yahoo Groups is changing--I'm now "neo" whatever that means--but it mostly means I CAN'T ACCESS MY GROUPS or SOME OF THEM HAVE DISAPPEARED!!  (laptop and tablet)  I'm trying to be patient--but its getting harder.  If anyone can shed some light on this "new improved" stuff--please enlighten me!

Rainbow Scrap Challenge Saturday

Red was the color for August.  More 30's fabrics bit the dust.  I cut up the smaller bits and had enough for two blocks.

See everyone's blocks at soscrappy.

A little sewing done over the weekend--I'm behind making Rainbow Scrappy Challenge blocks--here is a blue and two yellow.

See everyone's design walls at Patchwork Times.

Friday I called Pat and asked if she wanted to road trip.  SURE!!  We drove to Sioux City (IA-SD-NE) and visited Heart and Hands Dry Goods.  Pat bought a pattern and I did a little stash enhancing.  Next we saw a sign advertising Palmer Candy Company.  Pat bought treats for the grands.  The shop was full of candy and shoppers and had lots of staff to scoop your goodies into bags for you.

We were looking for a particular store--the on-line maps were wrong and we toured Iowa for a while.  Thought we might end up in Omaha--but we found an exit and got turned around and headed north again.   Pat and I are road tripping again on Friday. Pat asked if I know the stores in Sioux Falls better than IA?

Last week Laura Beth and family camped with us.  While Laura Beth was drying her hair the breaker kept flipping.  We blamed it on her Industrial Strength hair dryer and said she'd have to use mine.  Ken suggested she go outside and use the direct plug in on the camper electrical box.  So Laura Beth--this picture is for you.  Your own Outdoor Hair Salon. (courtesy of your father!)

After they left Ken and I remembered we were running the central air, an electric fry pan and the microwave.  Adding the hair dryer was too much.  Sorry Laura Beth--it really wasn't your Industrial Strength Hair dryer!

Weekly Goals-
  1. Cut out Red Rainbow Scrappy blocks
  2. Finish a YoYo block
  3. Bind teal/orange quilt
Its going to be a busy week.  Volunteering three days and we're going to RibFest on Saturday.  Ribs, Bands and Beer!

Motivation (not really) Friday

Friday, August 9, 2013
Its Friday again and nothing to show.  Nada.  Is it a summer slump?  Mostly I've just been busy.  This week Sandy and I attended the last concert in the park.

The weather was perfect for the summer concerts--Tuesday's was gorgeous--70's, a slight breeze and no bugs!  They are held outside at the Riverside Park Amphitheater--a full crowd--the overflow brings lawn chairs.  Thank you Yankton Area Arts!

Tonight Ken and I are going to his class reunion.   Although I wanted to wear high heels (yes--I love high heels!) I know I might be doing a lot of standing, and instead I'm wearing these--

Black suede flip-flops decorated with YoYo's!  Toni thought of it and made the yoyos and buttons! Thank you Toni!

Sewing??  Well, I have made yoyos and worked on my binding--I have two sides done now.  But that's it.  I'm enjoying summer.  Next week is Riverboat Days and its going to be BUSY!

Weekly Goals & Some Pictures

Saturday, August 3, 2013
Time to check on my goals--
  1. One YoYo block--in progress
  2. One side of binding sewn down--in progress
  3. Work on a UFO--nope
Yesterday it rained off and on all day--

Rain is almost always welcome in the summer.  Right now we're nice and green.

Down by Maintenance a Kildeer had a nest.  To keep from accidentally running over it they put a small steel fence post.  Every day someone would drive by to check it.  The eggs are laid on the bare ground--its very hard to see it.  Karla and I just happened to drive by when one egg had hatched.

Very hard to see the babies on the ground.  The parents were VERY upset--fluttering around us doing the distracting "broken wing--come eat me" dance.

There were 3 eggs--we only saw one chick and one egg didn't hatch.  We really weren't that close--Karla has a very good zoom lens on her camera.

This year I had a flower bed beside my camper.  I put in petunias, pansies, coxcomb, verbena, and glads.  Then I planted some seeds--morning glory, moonflowers, sweet peas, and zinnias.  I call it the "Green Volcana"--

About 5.5 feet tall.  Its a bit overfull!  Amazing what water and fertilizer will do.

Sometimes the daily police report is a bit humerous--

Really??  I can't believe someone actually called the police on this.
